Miriam Grossman - artist's bio
Miriam Grossman is a figurative artist. Her work attempts to coax the viewer towards introspection, through a relatable moment or portrait with a concentrated gaze. Born and raised in New York City, she completed a BFA with concentration in Drawing and Painting from Brooklyn College in 2020. Recently transplanted to South Florida, she finds her new status without ‘roots of place’ very liberating. While the vibrancy of both locations influence the artist, the move has assisted her universal messaging as she is freed from a mindset of culture specific to geography.
While faithful to traditional oil painting, she is discovering the versatility of acrylic paint as it lends itself to modern art applications. Recent exploration of linocut printmaking inform decisions about strokes and establish the composition in her newer paintings. Color choices are often bold, saturated, pure pigments. Currently she is challenging herself to limit the color palette to as few as only two, as well as limiting strokes essential to define form. Influences include Johann Vermeer’s famous gazes, Vincent Van Gogh’s brush strokes, Oskar Kokuschka’s unexpected color choices, and Malika Favre’s minimal graphic design forms. Grossman is enjoying placing hidden messages in her work, attributable to her joy as a child searching the art of Al Hirschfeld. Her favorite color is ‘Yves Klein Blue,’ and one of her favorite quotes is attributed to the artist: “The imagination is the vehicle of sensibility. Transported by the imagination, we attain life, life itself, which is absolute art.” |
